Click Lite Information Page
Mitsubishi's 'Click Lite' Event System is quite simply the ultimate professional printing system using Dye-sublimation technology to allow you to print photo-lab-quality pictures at your office or home. More and more professional photographers who are using high end digital cameras are choosing to take advantage of this technology. In dye-sublimation printing, colours are not laid down as individual dots, as is done in inkjet printers. Individual dots can be distinguished at a relatively close distance, making digital pictures look less realistic. The sublimation name is applied because the dye transitions between the solid and gas states without going through a liquid stage. Many consumer and professional dye-sublimation printers are designed and used for producing photographic prints of extreme high quality. If you looked inside a dye-sublimation printer, you would see a long roll of transparent film that resembles sheets of red, blue, yellow, and gray colored cellophane stuck together end to end. Embedded in this film are solid dyes corresponding to the four basic colors used in printing: cyan, magenta, yellow and black. So the main difference between this and other types of printing has to do with heat. The vaporized colors permeate the surface of the paper, creating a gentle gradation at the edges of each pixel, instead of the conspicuous border between dye and paper produced by inkjets. Most dye-sublimation printers use CMYO (cyan, magenta, yellow and overcoating) colours, which differs from the more recognized CMYK colours in that the black dye is eliminated in favour of a clear overcoating. This overcoating is also stored on the ribbon and is effectively a thin laminate which protects the print from discoloration from UV light and the air, and because the color infuses the paper, it is also less vulnerable to fading and distortion over time while also rendering the print water-resistant. Comparison with other printing systems Traditionally, the advantage of dye-sublimation printing has been the fact that it is a continuous-tone technology, where each dot can be any colour. In contrast, inkjet printers can vary the location and size of ink droplets, a process called dithering, but each drop of ink is limited to the colours of the inks installed. Consequently, a dye-sublimation printer produces true continuous tones appearing much like a chemical photograph. Dye sublimation offers some advantages over inkjet printing. For one, the prints are dry and ready to handle as soon as they exit the printer. As the dye never enters a liquid phase, the whole printing cycle is extremely clean; there are no liquid inks to clean up and no print heads to get clogged. These factors make dye-sublimation generally a more reliable technology over inkjet printing. Dye-sublimation photo printers are also being applied by professional photographers in event photography as the units' instant print ability allows photographers to produce and sell lab quality prints immediately during the event they are attending, with a minimal amount of hardware and at incredible prices. Print speed As dye-sublimation printers utilise heat to transfer the dye onto the print media, the printing speed is limited by the speed at which the elements on the thermal head can change temperature. Although print times vary among different dye-sublimation printers, a professional sub printer can print a 6" x 4" photo in as little as 6.8 seconds and a 9" x 6" in less than 20 seconds. In all cases, the finished print is completely dry once it emerges from the printer and of the highest quality. In fact the print quality is quite breathtaking and is as good if not better than taking it to my professional lab. So are there any other reasons why? The cost implications to the customer or client is passed back due to the set cost per media pack, (which contain both ribbon and paper), are rated for an exact number of prints which yields a fixed cost per print. As you can review the image before you print there is none or minimal waste from every media print pack making printing costs exceptionally low and profits margins are much better.
